My 13 year old Border has just come come from Liverpool University Small Animal Hospital after undergoing an operation to clean out a fungal infection in his sinuses and nostrils. Whilst he was in he had a full body CT scan where they found he has osteoarthritis in all his joints and part of his spine. He has been on Yumove for at least two years and never shown any symptoms of arthritis. The vet at the hospital advised to change it and put him on Yumove advanced. Has anyone any dealing with this?
Hi Frank, I’m not a vet or therapist, just a fellow owner of a dog with arthritis. I use Yumove Advance 360 for my dog – it’s specifically formulated to support joints in dogs with arthritis. You have to buy it from a vet though. As with all supplements, there isn’t a lot of evidence that they definitely work, except for marine-based omega 3 which is included in the Yumove.
You say that your dog hasn’t shown any signs of pain from the arthritis so therefore you presumably don’t feel he needs anti-inflammatories or other forms of pain relief. However, there are lots of things you can do to help him and avoid further damage caused by impact, slips, etc. You will find everything you need on the CAM website but it includes things like covering all slippery surfaces (even if you don’t feel your dog is slipping), using steps or ramps for getting into the car or on the sofa, etc. As you may know, CAM also has three Facebook pages, one for CAM itself, one for reviews of products related to osteoarthritis management and Holly’s Army, which is a great support group where people share their experiences. I hope this is helpful and I’m sure someone more qualified will be along to provide more advice.
