Hi, The vet I have my dogs titre tested at has recommended boswellia as an additional food supplement to try. Has anyone heard of it or tried it for their dogs (or even themsleves?) If so, what results if any did you get?
here is more info on supplements from the website
there aren’t many clinical trials out there to suggest definitively either way. I would do as kathryn suggested, give it a go for 6 weeks but have good observational markers so you can see the benefit if there or not!
My supplément régime include boswellia. Because it is combined with others ingredients I cannot say for sure it is that that works but it was recommended by a vet so I keep using it.
Sadly most supplements don’t have a lot of evidence behind them.. yet!
The ones with the most evidence are those containing glucosamine, chondroitin, omega 3 and green lipped muscle – if you’ve got to pick one I’d go for one of these.
I’ve not really met any clients who have tried boswellia or seen any good studies on it. In saying that it’s unlilely to cause any problems though so could be worth a try.. I’d make sure to give it for at least 6 weeks and try to pick specific pointers of pain in your dog that you can reassess after each week of treatment to see if it’s helped.
There are some good downloads to help you monitor your dog at home on the “how CAM can help” section of the website
We have and to be honest we didn’t notice any difference or improvement. Stopped it – still the same mobility so guessed, for us, it was not appropriate. That’s not to say that every dog responds the same as ours.
