Getting dogs of prescriotion drugs and onto alternatives
Can I ask what supplements you all use. Esmes metacam works but I would love to get her off it an on to maybe cbd and more supplements but am not sure how to go about it. She is only 10 and has monthly massage and I’m looking into acupuncture also.
It is also knowing what you can and cant give along side metacam as I dont want anything to interact. At the moment I just give green lipped mussel
Yes its the risk of side effects that concerns me, although I have since spoken to a vet nurse who says she has only had one case which was due to metacam use
If you visit our webpage www.caninearthritis.co.uk there is a bunch of information on the FAQ section regarding supplements.
With any joint supplement I would advise giving it for 6-8 weeks prior to trying to withdraw any other drugs as it is meant to take this long to build up to a therapeutic level in the body. The actual effectiveness of supplements used for arthritis is a tricky one as there is a lot of scientific evidence for it but anecdotally there is a lot of evidence to say they work well.
Is it the risk of side effects of metacam that make you want to stop it?
If something is working I’d question why you are looking to change it. Have 6 monthly blood tests to check organs are doing ok processing the metacam. A whole load of different supplements *could* well upset her system. I’m very much if it ain’t broke then don’t fix it… by all means research and be prepared for when things need to change for her though and she needs more help. Supplements don’t tend to provide the pain relief that prescription drugs do. They play a supporting role in my experience and opinion.
