9year old lab arthritis

Barley was diagnosed with arthritis 3 months ago, he is on 100mg carprox and synaquin suppliments, we need to get weight off him as he is 41kg after I swapped him from his regular light food to the senior version, he has put on 5 kg in under 9 months. I’m struggling to reduce his weight. His food is properly weighed out and he has no treats or titbits etc in 3 months, I give him bits of apples and carrots most days, he’s very lethargic most days and is reluctant to stay stood up for more than a few seconds at a time without laying back down, my vet suggested that he has a blood test for an under active thyroid problem, he has always weighed around the 34kg mark all of his life, surely a change of food is not the reason for his weight gain?, I need to get him back to his normal weight ASAP to take the extra strain off his legs, any advise is much appreciated,

Hi Keith
Yes I agree with your vet, a blood test at this point would be beneficial to rule out any issues such as thyroid which can affect weight. The other question I would have is has your dogs exercise pattern changed at all over the last few months? A decrease in exercise could also affect their weight, if the blood tests come back as normal then looking at several aspects of his lifestyle would be a good idea, definately agree getting any extra weight off will help his joints and it sounds like you have been doing everything right.
